The End of “Bad Grammar” Phishing
For years, business owners and employees have relied on a simple heuristic to spot phishing attempts: poor grammar and awkward phrasing. That safety net is effectively gone.
State-backed groups, particularly from Iran (APT42) and North Korea, are now leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to sanitize their communications. These tools allow threat actors to draft emails that sound indistinguishable from a native speaker or a professional recruiter, bypassing the human “red flags” we rely on for defense.
Automated Reconnaissance at Scale
The report highlights a disturbing trend in efficiency. North Korean actors are using AI to automate the tedious groundwork of hacking: reconnaissance. Instead of manually scraping data, they are using AI to:

- Map organizational charts and technical job roles.
- Gather salary data to create convincing recruitment lures.
This blurs the line between professional recruitment research and malicious targeting, making it incredibly difficult to detect early-stage intrusion attempts.
Malware is Calling Home (to APIs)
Perhaps the most technical evolution is the emergence of AI-integrated malware. We are moving past static code that antivirus software can easily memorize.
Google identified a malware strain dubbed HONESTCUE, which uses API calls to legitimate AI services to generate malicious code on the fly. By outsourcing the code generation to the cloud, the malware stays lightweight and changes its signature constantly, making traditional detection methods far less effective.
The “ClickFix” Trap
In a novel twist, attackers are abusing the trust users place in AI platforms. In a campaign observed late last year, hackers utilized the “public sharing” features of tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot.
They generated shareable links containing “helpful” instructions for computer tasks, which embedded malicious scripts disguised as solutions. Because the link comes from a trusted domain (like openai.com or google.com), it bypasses network filters and gains immediate user trust.
Protecting Your IP
For founders building proprietary technology, the threat extends to Intellectual Property theft. The report details a surge in “distillation attacks,” where attackers bombard an AI model with over 100,000 prompts to reverse-engineer its reasoning logic. The goal is to clone your proprietary model’s capabilities without ever accessing the source code.
