Within a span of just six days this January, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic all dropped major medical AI announcements. If you think this timing is coincidental, think again. This is a calculated signaling war, and for business leaders, it marks a significant shift in where the AI market is heading next.
But before you start envisioning AI doctors replacing your GP, let’s look at the fine print. None of these tools are cleared as medical devices. None are approved for diagnosis. Instead, we are witnessing a race to capture the infrastructure of healthcare—specifically the administrative and operational bottlenecks that cost the industry billions.
The Three-Pronged Attack
While the timing was synchronized, the go-to-market strategies reveal three very different visions for how AI will integrate into our lives and businesses:

- Google (The Developer Play): Google’s release of MedGemma 1.5 is an open model aimed at builders. They are handing sophisticated tools—capable of interpreting 3D CT scans and MRI images—to developers to build their own applications on top of Google’s tech stack.
- Anthropic (The Enterprise Play): Claude for Healthcare is strictly B2B. They are targeting the messy backend of healthcare: insurance claims, coding systems, and HIPAA-compliant data processing. They aren’t trying to wow consumers; they are trying to fix institutional workflows.
